"The Tax Man Cometh" is the sixth episode of Season 1 of Robin Hood.
Plot[]
A butcher in Nottingham is disguising rotten meat from the castle as fresh meat. Robin and Much go to confront him, but the butcher tells about them to the guards, forcing the two to escape.
A dishevelled nun walks towards Nottingham and collapses right in front of Gisborne. She says that she is the Abbess of Rufford, and that she was attacked by outlaws in the forest while she was on a pilgrimage.
In Sherwood, the outlaws stop a cart driven by two goat farmers. In reality they turn out to be tax inspectors that have come to Nottingham to count North England’s taxes before they are taken to London. Robin comes up with a plan, and the outlaws force the taxman, Flaxton, to work with them by taking his son, Cedric, as hostage.
Gisborne visits Marian and tries to gift her a brooch, but she declines. He tells her about the abbess, and wars her that the world is a dangerous place for a single woman. Marian is not impressed when he tries to suggest marriage. Later she speaks with Edward, who tells her that being the Nightwatchman is too dangerous. Marian says she would rather be a nun than Gisborne’s wife.
In the castle, Gisborne tells the Sheriff about the abbess. She promises to pay for their hospitality, though the Sheriff is not happy about her presence. As she tries to go to the chapel, she is stopped by the guards. She complains to the Sheriff, who agrees to take care of it. He has been hiding the tax money in the chapel, so he has it hidden better and allows the abbess to go in and pray.
Marian helps the outlaws into Nottingham by distracting the guards. She tells Robin about Gisborne. He is shocked to hear that she wants to leave home. Marian goes to the castle, where she goes to the abbess to ask to be a novice. Gisborne is disappointed to find out the abbess agreed.
Flaxton, enters the castle with Will, who pretends to be Cedric. They help the other outlaws in as well, and go search for the money in the vault. Flaxton locks them in, and the outlaws realise that the whole thing was a trap and the chests are empty. While Flaxton goes to repot the situation to Sheriff and collects his reward of 500 pounds, Will crafts a key that allows them to escape. The outlaws end up fighting with the Sheriff and his men, but they take the Sheriff as a hostage to ensure their way out. Gisborne berates Robin for attacking a nun, but when none of the outlaws seem to know anything about a nun, the Sheriff realises they have been fooled. The Sheriff rushes to the chapel only to find out that all the money is gone, and the abbess has escaped through the window.
Djaq is guarding Cedric in the forest. He tries to get her to release him, but she refuses. While she goes to speak with the other outlaws, Cedric manages to slip out of the ropes. The outlaws follow him in the hopes that he will lead them to the tax money.
At Knighton, Marian is getting ready to leave. Edward promises to accept her as the Nightwatchman in order to get her to stay. Later Gisborne comes to visit and lets Marian know that the abbess was an imposter. He also tells her that he had already told Edward earlier. She goes to her father, thankful, because even though he knew she wouldn’t have been able to leave, he was still willing to accept her.
Cedric leads the outlaws to his father and the fake abbess, who has now taken her disguise off. The outlaws take the money from them and use it to buy fresh meat for the villages for the next two years.
