"Dead Man Walking" is the eleventh episode of Season 1 of Robin Hood.
Plot[]
Gisborne and his men are arresting people at Locksley for not paying their taxes. This includes Luke the Cooper, who has been making bows to Robin in secret. Little Little John tries to stop the men from finding the bows, so he too is arrested. Little John and Robin watch from the treeline, and John attacks the carriage in the forest to save his son. He is unsuccessful, and gets overpowered. In the fight he loses his tag, which means he can’t be identified as one of Robin Hood’s men.
Gisborne tells the Sheriff about the bows Luke has been making. He would like to make an example of Luke by executing him, but the Sheriff wants him to make bows for them instead. The Sheriff decides to host a Festival of Pain, where the prisoners will be tortured for entertainment and to set an example. Luke is tortured in the dungeons, but doesn’t agree to the Sheriff’s demands.
As Marian enters the castle, she sees John among the prisoners in the courtyard. She speaks with Gisborne, questioning why so many people are being punished. John gets taken to the dungeons. Marian overhears Gisborne and the Sheriff discuss their plan to transport the tax money to London during the Festival of Pain.
The outlaws plan on getting in to the castle to save John by having Allan and Robin disguise themselves as guards and arresting Will. Unfortunately, the dungeons are full, so Allan and Robin have to leave Will outside with the other prisoners.
In the dungeons, Little Little John recognises John as the man that attacked the guards in the forest. He says he does not remember the conversation they had back in Locksley, thinking it had been a dream. John reveals he knows Little Little John’s mother.
Marian tries to go to the dungeons with the intention of freeing Little John, but gets discovered. She manages to hide her lockpick in a candleholder. She is staying at the castle while her father is away, and Gisborne tells Robin, still disguised as a guard, to take Marian’s things to her room. Marian recognises him, and Robin listens in on Gisborne and Marian’s conversation where Gisborne says that he wants to spend more time with her. After he leaves, Robin sneaks into Marian’s room. She tells him about the plan to transport the money, and instructs him on where he can find the lockpick, which Robin then finds and takes to Will.
Alice tries to bribe the guards to let her see her son. She even runs up to the Sheriff, begging to get a chance to see Little Little John. Instead, she too is taken to the dungeons, where she recognises John. She is angry at him for leaving her and letting her think he was dead. Luke realises who John must be, and thinks Little Little John should know the truth. John reveals that he is Little Little John’s father. Alice doesn’t believe John when he says that he is one of Robin Hood’s men.
It is the day of the Festival of Pain, and the Sheriff shows off the different torture devices. Will picks his handcuffs and passes the lockpick to the next prisoner. As Luke, Alice and Little Little John are about to be tortured, John breaks himself free. Robin begins to throw around the money he and Allan stole earlier, causing a distraction which allows the prisoners to escape. John is about to kill the Sheriff, but Alice stops him.
Meanwhile Gisborne and his men leave Nottingham with the supposed tax money. Djaq and Much close the city gates behind them, and Gisborne goes to check the sacks only to find out they are full of grain. His men break open the gate, and while they rush to the castle, all the prisoners escape. Gisborne finds the Sheriff tied up in the Great Hall. Luke, Alice and Little Little John are leaving to go start a new life. John says his goodbyes, saddened that he can’t be a part of his son’s life. As they leave, Little Little John says he is proud that his father is one of Robin Hood’s men.
